In this age of digital citizenship, Media Literacy is a vehicle for education’s modernisation

This website contains information about the actions and programmes of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, which are geared towards the cultivation of Media Literacy in school education.

The European Commission defines Media Literacy as the ability to access, analyse and evaluate the power of images, sounds and messages, which we are now being confronted with on a daily basis and are an important part of our contemporary culture, as well as to communicate competently in information and communication media. Media Literacy relates to all media, including television and film, radio, print media, the Internet and other new digital communication technologies.

Media Literacy is now considered a major factor of sustainable development as it is not restricted to the development of a set of skills, enabling us to access, understand or even ignore information we receive from the various information and communication media; it is also connected with issues of personal and moral development, critical thinking, creativity, respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, social justice, protection of the environment and, more broadly, issues of democratic coexistence.

Our aim is to apply innovative pedagogical approaches in order to equip teachers and students with knowledge, skills, behaviours, attitudes, values and tools that allow them access to information, to consume and generate content with critical competence, protect themselves against misinformation and cyberbullying, and use their knowledge and imagination to create messages and ideas, but also to communicate these responsibly and safely.
